71 Valentines

My unexpected miracle this day of hearts is 71 Valentines.

Last week, Rebecca invited her 7th grade church friends over to our home to make Valentines for the children in the hospital.

I told this group of eager-to-help girls how lonely the ‘minor’ holidays can be when you find yourself strapped to life-necessitating machines while your friends and family enjoy their festivities. Christmas is remembered, but the less popular celebratory days like Thanksgiving and Valentines – not so much.

Rebecca wanted to find a way to honor inpatient children with a gesture that said,

‘I understand. You are not forgotten’

And so these young women handcrafted 71 unique, creative, feather adorned, and glitter-filled Valentines.

71 expressions of love.

With grand plans to deliver each of these Valentines from outpatient status, they will now be delivered as an inpatient.

Attached to an IV pole with narcotics coursing through her veins, there is no doubt when Rebecca looks into the eyes of her fellow patients that she truly understands.

And guess what?

God knew in advance when these cards were made that we would be in the hospital, once again, for another holiday.

God knew which child, nurse, and doctor would receive each thoughtful note.

And only God could know what that would mean to each individual heart.
Further confirmation to my soul that if God is in control of the miniscule details such as the distribution of 71 hand-made Valentines, then that very same God is more than capable of orchestrating a grand purpose for our unexpected lives.

So as we strung up heart banners around the room, while choosing red and pink outfits to wear, Rebecca and I looked at each other and smiled – a deep, joy-filled smile.

Because we have learned that one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves and those surrounding us is the ability to find joy in any location and under any circumstance.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit,” Romans 15:13.

Thank you Lord.

Love to you all,
